Strangely enough I didn't mean to write this article.

The Reason I have written it was that I was just speaking to a friend who said she'd just won a big prize on the Dutch national Lottery. She hadn't bought a ticket.... I gently broke it to her that it was a confidence trick.

This trick takes one of two paths - by phone or by mail.(I had the mail one every week for ages !) It goes like this -

Congratulations ! - You have Won 250,000 Euros in the Netherlands National Lottery

Your Winning Ticket Number is 08 11 14 19 23 37 and a number has been drawn at random for all residents of your country.

This number has been successful in winning the second Prize - Congratulations !

In order to Process your payment promptly and pay the necessary state taxes (as you are a Foreign National) there is a fee due of $ 2100.

This may be paid by Visa or Mastercard or cheque.

Please send payment on the form below to :

This is typical of the confidence trick letter - it is NOT a real win !

Some of these letters are really good and even have the REAL winning number printed on them (easy to do - they just send them out the day after the real draw !

Here's how you tell it's a CONFIDENCE TRICK :

• 1 National Lotteries do NOT send out FREE tickets to anyone !
• 2 They NEVER charge a processing fee (if they did they would deduct it from the win wouldn't they ?
• 3 They NEVER ask for Credit Card Details
• 4 How can you win a Lottery you didn't BUY a ticket for ?
• 5 Why is it from a FOREIGN Lottery Company ?
• 6 Why do you have to pay TAX on a Lottery Win (that seldom happens anywhere)

• Please don't fall for this confidence trick either by Letter ,email or by Phone.
• If someone phones you - ask how they got your number !
• Get their number and say you'll call them back (then pass it to the Police) Then put the phone down.

• Your local Police Station will be really keen to get the details and will help you.Don't hesitate to contact them.

• Now isn't the World a STRANGE PLACE... ?
• The morning after I wrote this article I had an email
• apparently I've won 450 Thousand Sterling and a BRAND NEW BMW CAR !
• (Not really though .. it was another con just trying to get my details !)
  But it *IS* going on - don't be fooled !!!
